Fire Prevention

On this page you will learn some of the basic things you can do to prevent a fire from damaging your life.

Fire Prevention Education is one of the most rewarding programs you could participate in, whether you are a resident, child or parent, teacher or firefighter. The knowledge gained, "KNOWING WHAT TO DO", through attending or teaching these programs could save your life or the life of someone near and dear. Once a fire starts... there's no time to develop a plan!

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimates that approximately 80 percent of all fire deaths in the United States and Canada occur in the Home. Roughly 11 people per day, die in home fires in the US and Canada.

Many lives can be saved if people React immediately when a fire alarm sounds. Once a fire starts, there's no time to develop a plan. The NFPA urges everyone to "KNOW WHEN TO GO".

To help protect you and your family, follow these important steps for fire prevention:

  1. Have multiple smoke detectors in your home; especially near or in your sleeping quarters.
  2. Test each detector every month, and change the batteries twice a year.
  3. Have an emergency plan with your family on what to do in case of a fire.
  4. Make sure that you have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, and have another some where upstairs.
  5. Never go back into a building on fire.
  6. Call the fire department at the first sign of a fire - DIAL 911
  7. Never play with fire.
  8. Be extra careful when you are using fire.
